Activities Info
Unless otherwise noted in the activity flyer, please bring $5 per car for runs.On the Road: FRS/GMRS Radios are Required!
If you been on a tour with us you know that we use our FRS/GMRS radios a lot -- in addition to the general chatter, the radios are needed to keep the groups together, let you know of upcoming turns, or to provide warnings for upcoming road hazards. The club has a few radios that we are able to provide as loaners for newcomers; regular participants are expected to provide their own radios. The club radios have an optional external antenna (allowing for better transmission and reception in the mountains) and are available from www.westcoastmall.net; they are Midland Radios, Model 75-510XLM and run $60. You may also want a headset (Midland 22-540, $15) or a hand-held microphone (Midland 22-401, $30); here is a link to the radio (Midland 75-510XLM).
Having said all that, you can just as easily pick up a pair of FRS/GMRS radios at Costco, Frys or Fred Meyer for about $50 without a headset. If you hunt around a little bit you should be able to also find a compatible headset. Both Motorola and Cobra make decent radios. You can spend as much or as little as you like to fill the need for a radio, but please do get one. Actually, you should get a second one for your navigator! If you are interested in the higher end radios and headsets that some of us use (more power, more durable) feel free to ask us about it at the next event! Please be prepared to bring radios with you to the next event!
